i am completely in love with Jane Austen right now. i would like to publicly repent for ever saying idiotic things like, "i don't know--she's a bit boring." what was i thinking? i could happily (or should i say dismally) read through the Bronte sisters over and over. what wasn't to like about Austen? well, whatever it was, everything has changed now. i'm in the beginnings of reading "Persuasion" and LOVE how she develops her characters. even if you don't like her writing, it is worth it to read the first chapter of that book and then think about how much you know about these people in such a short time. brilliant.

when i grow up, i'm gonna be like her. :)

if you ever have a hankerin' for good old-fashioned chicken soup, these are the key ingredients (other than the chicken, of course.) mmmm, good.

i'm not sure if i've ever mentioned just how much i love clouds. so here it is. i love clouds. i'm not sure when this, uh, obsession started, but i'd like to think it was related to my dad being a science teacher and pointing out thunderheads to us girls.

my earliest pictures (using my snazzy 110 film) were of clouds, though they didn't ever really turn out very well. maybe this is why i loved amelie so much as clouds were the first things she took pictures of...hehe

(i love it when you feel like they're so close you can touch them. this happened in colorado sprgs a lot...)

in crafting news, i'm going to be sending a new scarf over to funky utopia in a couple of weeks because fall is almost here! whahoo! also, my scarves are on sale there, so check them out! :)

i, by way of my youngest sister, discovered the addiction associated with knitting with the knifty knitter recently. she bought me a set for my birthday and i thought they'd be nice to use every once in a while when i was tired of knitting the 'real' way. little did i know that they have magical powers inside of them which refuse to let you go until you've completed the project you started. and won't let you go until you've made several more of the same said project. moments after finishing my first newborn hat (over lunch, mind you), i found myself frantically wrapping more yarn around the thing and starting a new one. it's crazy. i've left it at home this week because it was becoming a little too much. ;) that said, now i have a bunch of cute baby hats to donate which is cool! :)

on a sad knitting note, my beloved blanket met what i feel is it's end on monday. i bound off (nice and loose like i was supposed to) and happily sewed in the ends before i realized that something wasn't quite right. in fact, something was quite wrong. turns out one side (the bound off side) is massively shorter than the others. and i can't find the sewn in piece of yarn to undo it. (darn fluffy, soft, angelic yarn!) it looks so innocent and sweet all folded up but as soon as i unfold it, it is just...really difficult to not notice. man, it is sooo soft, though! and so sweet! my first blanket. is it destined to sit in my closet the rest of it's life?

more things to do in lalaland (meaning l.a. of course!)

this weekend some friends and i went to Olivera Street which i'd like to take the opportunity to highly recommend. downtown l.a. is one of those places that you know you should go to and check out (since there are all these cool markets and restaurants, etc. there) but which for some reason you never go to. i've driven by it many times and have even waved at the skyscrapers as i drove on towards santa monica or wilshire or hollywood. i've told myself it's the traffic i can't handle (which is partially true) and that i'd rather not go by myself (which is more true) and that parking is horrible (which is extremely true.) all those nice little reasons have remained nestled in my heart and ready to pop up whenever i got a whim to go.

so anyway, i learned the key to getting past all of those things. a.) take the metro since it goes straight to union station (which is, incidentally right across the street from olivera), b.) go with friends and family and c.) take said metro for $2.50 and avoid traffic (and since gas is $2.50 a gallon here anyway...might as well.)

i'm so glad i went. we walked down a row with restaurants to our left and stands carrying everything from purses to ponchos on our right. then we turned and came back down on the other side of the stands and ordered our lunch from a taco stand. this is where i've failed miserably because i don't have any idea what this place is called. but it was GOOD. i had chicken enchiladas, rice and beans--made right in front of my grinning face. i usually can't handle the greasy food thing but maybe sunday was my lucky day because greasy it was but my tummy was so happy it forgave me. :)

after parading back down the street with our lunches in tow, we crossed over to a gazebo area and listened to the mariachi bands playing. it was so fun.

a couple hours later, we were walking back with churros and icecreams in hand (for that long, arduous walk across the street, haha). happiness. and all for less than $10. i should have a show called "Ten Dollar Fun in L.A." or something.
