Off for the Weekend!

Well, we're off to the Columbia River Gorge for the weekend! We haven't had a chance to explore over there and want to check out Multnomah Falls, Hood River and Maryhill Museum (not to mention Stonehenge!)...hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

Pretty Weekend

We had two glorious weeks of sunshine--TWO WEEKS!--which clearly explains my absence here on the blog. It even reached 90 one weekend and we realized how adapted we had become as we whined and wilted just like the locals. :) We tried not to whine, but it really felt so warm compared to our normal 50s.

On Saturday, we drove over to downtown and walked the riverfront. The picture of the vines above is from under one of the bridges. So beautiful. We walked and walked and people watched. Discovered a cute little area that has cafes and tables right on the river. Walked across the Hawthorne Bridge over to OMSI and then walked back, across the pedestrian bridge and back up to the Steel Bridge and over to Union Station.

The iris were in bloom along the river and the rhododendrons...The rhododendrons! They are trees here. I've never seen such a thing--they're red, cream, pink, orange, white...frills of color like pretty petticoats. Oh, I love them! Maybe they will be my bougainvillea for now.

I had had big plans in my head--walk the riverfront, then spend the afternoon moseying through shops and Powells--but once we finished the walk, all we could think of was finding a place to sit down. And all I could think of was, "Is it lunch yet?" We wandered some more and found ourselves in line at little big burger. Absolute deliciousness. The bread (brioche!), cheese (tillamook cheddar, swiss, chevre, or blue cheese, all local), the spicy ketchup, the meat...oh, so good. The fries are yukon goldens, fried and tossed with sea salt and truffle oil. Seriously delicious. We left full and happy. And tired. What a nice day...

Thank you, Alyssa

I love receiving presents from the nieces...this one is from Alyssa who is 4. She is really into rainbows right now which makes me smile. Being an 80s kid myself, I remember collecting rainbow stickers and trading them with my friends. I also love that this is a picture of Strawberry Shortcake. Oh, how I loved her and her somewhat strawberry scented hair! At one point, I had a strawberry shaped buggy for her and Huckleberry Finn to right around in. Wonder whatever happened to that... Happy memories...

Outside our Window

Have I shown you the tree outside our window lately? It wasn't too long ago when it looked like this! I didn't take any in between pictures, when thousands of yellow, pollen-covered flowers covered it. They then proceeded to dump their pretty selves onto my car for a couple of weeks which was lovely. :) There is a bonus point for the rain here! The pollen gets washed away--thank goodness!

Well, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the beauty around you today... :)

Rain

It's raining today and it looks like my lunchtime walk will be rained out. Well maybe not. It depends on how windy it is. Work clothes + rain + wind + umbrella that keeps on wanting to blow inside out = a very bedraggled look after lunch.

One of the first things we noticed when we arrived here was the lack of umbrellas. At first, we thought it was because everyone just wore jackets with hoods and had given up on the bulky umbrella since it, ahem, rains here a lot. But as the months have gone by, I've noticed that more often than not, people just get wet. Most of them don't even walk faster. I see kids standing at the bus stop wearing their hoodies and jeans in the pouring rain--brr. But then again, we're new here. It's a different culture. Maybe by next year, our umbrellas will begin to gather dust and we'll have thicker blood. Until then, I'll wear my jacket AND carry around my silly umbrella. :)

Sweet Memories

Thinking about my sister's little girls today. At Christmas one of them was riding the rocking horse and squealing "Ney!" with each rock. It was the sweetest thing. Every time I tried to catch it on video, she would smile and look at me so alas, I don't have it. I'm sure she'll be completely over riding the rocking horse when when I see her next. :)
