We had two glorious weeks of sunshine--TWO WEEKS!--which clearly explains my absence here on the blog. It even reached 90 one weekend and we realized how adapted we had become as we whined and wilted just like the locals. :) We tried not to whine, but it really felt so warm compared to our normal 50s.
On Saturday, we drove over to downtown and walked the riverfront. The picture of the vines above is from under one of the bridges. So beautiful. We walked and walked and people watched. Discovered a cute little area that has cafes and tables right on the river. Walked across the Hawthorne Bridge over to
OMSI and then walked back, across the pedestrian bridge and back up to the Steel Bridge and over to Union Station.
The iris were in bloom along the river and the rhododendrons...The rhododendrons! They are trees here. I've never seen such a thing--they're red, cream, pink, orange, white...frills of color like pretty petticoats. Oh, I love them! Maybe they will be my bougainvillea for now.
I had had big plans in my head--walk the riverfront, then spend the afternoon moseying through shops and Powells--but once we finished the walk, all we could think of was finding a place to sit down. And all I could think of was, "Is it lunch yet?" We wandered some more and found ourselves in line at
little big burger. Absolute deliciousness. The bread (brioche!), cheese (tillamook cheddar, swiss, chevre, or blue cheese, all local), the spicy ketchup, the meat...oh, so good. The fries are yukon goldens, fried and tossed with sea salt and truffle oil. Seriously delicious. We left full and happy. And tired. What a nice day...
